Balanced Cuber or Vanilla Fragger? - Noobicus - 12-06-2011

My inner nerd came out today and I decided to do evaluate stats on the {BoB} ladder. I made some interesting findings. Now, before I begin, this is not an attempt to say who is a better player and obviously the statistics can be skewed based on types of games played and whom they were played against.

It is easy to look at raw frag and flag ratios, but I find it interesting to see how they break out. The {BoB} lists total frags along with headshots, nade gibs, shotgun splats and knife slashes. There are people out there that have ridiculously high headshot percentages or shotgun splats, but I wanted to know who mixes it up the most; One who can do well in a shotgun slugfest as well get headshots, two very different disciplines. Adding in the ability to time nades for a gib and switch to knife for a quick slash adds to my idea of a well rounded player.

Again, I used the {BoB} ladder for statistics as TyD does not separate knife slashes on their website. I looked at overall scores for the top 100 to get a decent sample size. These scores were taken 12/5/2011 at 1900 GMT. No, I am not statistician, so I am sure some of my methods are flawed. Too bad. Tongue

So I decided to look at the percentage of regular frags compared to the four “special” frags. First thought would be someone with a low regular frag % would be versatile. Well, that was debunked when I sorted on that column. Notice SuaveDude’s impressive HS % and Slash %, yet he never used the shotty. darknes and gabybaires appear to never snipe or slash.

I then decided to look for players with greater than 5% of their kills in each category. Surprisingly, I only found one player, ElCre#M|A#. Is he the ultimate cuber or maybe a fine utility player? It is hard to say, but in any case, I dropped the requirements to 2% for each category and got this list of 10 sorted by lowest percentage of regular frags.

So is DES|Perros the best all round player? He has a huge splat headshot differential, but the headshot percentage is impressive as is the gib and slash percentages. ElCre#M|A# has less variance in his numbers and was the only one to be over 5% in each category. Notice xXmayXx/fr and B}Droid who have a deviation of only 3.36 and 4.78 between their highest and lowest percentages. Further note that B}Droid had the lowest difference between splat and headshot percentages. That means he is effective with two very different style weapons. Perhaps that defines best player? Cool

So Droid was the only B} on the lists above, but that is because only three B}s where in the top 100 for overall rankings thus I don’t feel there was enough data to accurately represent the rest of us. Murph is a specialist so he did not make it the all around categories and I am a noob so I missed out too.

B}CharlyMurphie – You are one of a kind.
B}Noobicus – Needs to work on sniper… a lot. Dodgy
B}Droid – Very good numbers. Get more slashes in if you can!
B}titi – You have excellent numbers as well. You narrowly missed the 2% cutoff with splats. Good job!
B}Verse – Wow, second lowest HS%, but you are a shotty beast.
B}Nightmare – Good all around numbers. I wish I were closer to your HS numbers. Get HS% to 2 and bump slashes up and you will be awesome.
B}Evanzo23 – Awesome numbers and would have made the all around top 10 and nearly made the 5% cutoff with ElCre#M|A#, but your sample size was too small. Sorry Evan. Confused
B}Shadowz – Good mix bro. I bet not having a mouse make knife switching tough.
B}Razta – You beast. Get more time in.
B}Zarj – Y U no shotty?!
B}Ronald_Reagan - Very shotty centric and no knife. I presume the mouse issue? Good HS% though.
B}ukz – Looks like you played a lot of LSS and OSOK. Crazy high numbers. Not enough data really.
B}Orynge. Sorry no data buddy.

{BoB} Ladder

This exercise got me thinking that it might be neat to add these stats to the {BoB} ladder. I will talk to gRamps about it. I was thinking of little titles like they had on the hi-skill ladder. Here is what I was thinking:
Finally, I am going to talk to the {BoB} clan about making some daily or monthly awards similar to what hi-skill had. Here are some of the awards I was thinking of:
1. Shotty Noob – Highest splat over headshot percentage difference with less HS%<1.
2. Sniper Snob – Highest headshot over splat percentage with splat % <1.
3. Nade Spammer – Highest gib percentage.
4. Slasher – Highest slash percentage.
5. Vanilla Fragger – Highest percentage of regular frags.
6. Gibber extraordinaire – Lowest percentage of suicides compared to gibs.
7. Don’t play with Nades – Highest percentage of suicides compared to gibs.
8. Afraid of Grenades – Lowest percentage of gibs
9. Not allowed to play with Knives – Lowest slash %

Agreed! This is terrific, Noobicus! It's great to see the difference in numbers around here, and I wish I would have made the cutoff with TheCrema. I probably would have if I played more on the {BoB} ladder, but as I have said before, I do not care for that ladder. Thanks for spending so much time on this!

Although quite limited in its data collection. Hopefully the next version of AC wil provide better data (more accurate log parsing, you can tell what weapon did the _frag_). As I consider carbine my primary weapon, yet it only does frags Wink

I have one question, how did you collect this data? Did you enter the numbers into a spreadsheet one by one? :O

TyD ladder doesn't break out slashes. And there have been some issues with the numbers on the website. Sad
